Obviously Lip Gloss’s minimalist backdrop is key to its allure. But a propos of the mash-up discussion elsewhere, this piece shows that Lil’ Mama’s vocals hold up fabulously in a maximalist context as well.

I seem to remember Lip Gloss popping up on heaps of mashups I listened to at the time, at least in my circles these were better known that the original. Hearing it now I can’t believe how committed it is to it’s minimalist backing for a song about gloss. The vocal makes it, I agree.

Super Bass used to be my karaoke song of choice but International Player’s Anthem is one of the greatest rap songs ever. Most I’ve ever spent on a record is on that Texas-shaped vinyl as a Christmas present for my proudly Texan girlfriend.

Obviously all of these are great, but the minimalist banger “Lip Gloss” was new to me and I thought it would probably need the vote more.

I chucked two tracks from my Uncool50 list into this group – each of which has one of my favourite ever guest verses. “Gossip Folks” isn’t as well-loved as “Work It” from this LP but it’s a wonderful showcase of Missy’s ringmaster mode, acting as the centre of a track with so many brilliant pieces: her closing fury (“HEY MISSY??!!”), the Double Dutch sample, the beat, and best of all Ludacris’ thrown-out-there drawl.

Andre 3000’s opening verse on “Int’l Players Anthem” tho is just something else entirely, maybe the thing I love most by him across his entire career, getting right into the 70s Blaxploitation vibe of the Willie Hutch sample and coming up with a bit of half-rap-half-poetry which could have been on Hustler’s Convention but also injects a bit of uncynical joy and an extra dimension into a song which is otherwise squarely about pimping (brilliant tho it is).

I’d say the “I’ve got a headache and it’s a not a tumor” line hasn’t aged well but Kindergarten Cop was 12 years old when Gossip Folks came out so it was never a timely reference!
