Post-metal/hardcore is usually not really my cup of tea, but ‘How to Get Bigger’ appeals to me with its directness and full frontal assault on the capitalist rat race. The band no longer exists, but classically trained singer Julie Christmas is still a big name in the genre.

Hidden Masters had quite a lot of buzz when they released Of This & Other Worlds among fans of psychedelic and classic rock on Rise Above. The album appeared in quite some yearlists among The Obelisk readers. Unfortunately the band seems to have split up shortly after the release, but maybe somebody with more knowledge of the Glasgow scene knows more about that. Still, ‘Fall in Line’ is an absolute gem of track, one for with the label ‘Beatleseque’ is completely justified.

This is the second time one of mine has ended up in a group where everything else is on my shortlist. That Hidden Masters one is a Golden Beat for me and while I’m not sure Made Out Of Babies would ordinarily be my thing, that’s pretty close to my GB list as well.
Anyway, I know precious little about Trips and Falls. I downloaded this from somewhere back in the day, loved it, bought the album, loved that and then entirely forgot about it for 10 years until I was looking for acts that hadn’t been in the polls before to nominate. It’s been strange to revisit it; I’m writing this while watching a particularly excellent sunset out of my window and the the song seems to complement what I’m looking at perfectly.

I can recommend the whole album! The album art is done by Piet Parra, who co-founded the band as a guitarist and songwriter. He never plays live with the band, only on the records. He’s more famous as an artist than as a musician.
