Modern Playlists Day 6 + Covers Crowdsourcing

Welcome back! This post is doing DOUBLE DUTY as a standard playlist post but also as a crowdsourcing exercise for one of the Day 11 groups next week, a themed group on “21st Century Covers of 20th Century Songs”.

There are two criteria here. One is that it’s a genuinely transformative cover, not just an ‘interpolation’ or some John Lewis piano shit. So like “Comfortably Numb” by Scissor Sisters. The other is that it’s something we haven’t polled before. So NOT like “Comfortably Numb” by Scissor Sisters.

I guess the query here is how transformative one might consider Rina’s Enter Sandman. Difficult to cover Enter Sandman without sticking that riff in it.
I’ve already nominated one of these though elsewhere – Jason Isbell’s take on Sad But True is genuinely transformative for that song – so it would be entirely fair if the Rina suggestion is ignored.

Shatner had THREE songs in the original Covers poll apparently…

Yeah and Roberta Flack’s version of To Love Somebody got dumped out in the qualifiers, whilst I think one of the Shatner songs got through. One of my first exposures to the University of Musical Perversity that these polls can sometimes become.

I’m just really happy right now that Travis’s version of “Baby One More Time” came out in 1999 and so is ineligible.

Maybe not transformative enough (it’s just straightforward “covering in another style” rather than “full-on deconstruction/reinvention”, but I’ve always thought Eli “PAPERBOY” Reed & The True Loves – Ace Of Spades from 2009 is an, um, ace cover version.

Oh, and from your own 1985 covers playlist I really, really enjoyed Sergeant Thunderhoof – Cloudbusting. That one I really do feel goes way beyond the tired “metal band covering non-metal song” trope, truly making the original song *work* in the changed musical context.

But I suspect what you’re really looking for is covers that actually *sound* 21st-century-like. And not just like something that could very easily have come out in the same century as the orginal. In which case, yeah, I got nothing.

No not at all! I think transformative readings could easily come from a different social/personal perspective rather than a contemporary musical one – something from Tori’s Strange Little Girls project for instance.
