Initially I thought the Glee song was very cringy, making me question if randomly bursting into song could ever solve anything. Then I thought, this is great! I guess that was the whole point of Glee. I liked the Cam song too, a bit of a good old sing-along. The Organ and the Snow Patrol in for a struggle here.

As I mentioned introducing this group on Twitter I had completely forgotten how huge both Glee and Snow Patrol were at different times in the last 20 years. Glee is understandable – it’s like the people’s pop polls of musical theatre, you never know what’s going to show up. Snow Patrol though is very strange to me – one minute they were vague second-string contemporaries of B&S, the next they had a lock on post-defeat sports highlight reels for what seemed like years.

I always thought of Snow Patrol as more like Coldplay or Elbow rather than B&S but now you point it out, I can see the link.
I was surprised at how successful I found the Glee track.

Yeah the contemporaries of B&S thing isn’t so much about their sound – if I ever knew what early Snow Patrol sounded like, I’ve forgotten. It’s more literal: they were a Glasgow indie band on Jeepster in 1998 before their reinvention as montage kings. It was as if Looper or someone suddenly became inescapable.

I think I mentioned this in a previous poll, but there’s an unrecognized but distinct Scottish Sound that forms a throughline in 21st century rock, encompassing the likes of Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, even Idlewild. It’s characterized by stormy guitars, intense emotionality, and, to varying extents, strongly accented vocals. My sense is that Snow Patrol found a way to take that style and and smarten it up until it was fit to soundtrack a Grey’s Anatomy scene.

Oh I vaguely knew The Organ! I helped carry the actual Organ down the street and down the stairs to their practice space on Abbott street once after a show at Lotus hotel opening for the Skinjobs and there were maybe 20 people there? Vancouver 2002. I was in a undergrad philosophy class with the singer. I bought their 7” at a show! From the band! Self pressed! They were only brand new, a highly tentative band and then they signed a record deal and were almost HUGE and it all got weird I think. It seemed like there were lots of bands in Vancouver that sounded kinda like this at the time. Moody 80s post punk. Maybe I am just thinking of Radio Berlin though? It seemed like you could see a show like this every week or two. It was the first year I could go to clubs and drink in bars. I didn’t nominate the Organ and I’d mostly forgotten them but I did vote for them here!

Voted Glee, but I would have like it even better if the song has stayed in full on gospel attack mode the entire time and not smuggled in some AL Webber-style musical stylings. Fun to see Sophie Lennon from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in another role.

Glee always had one of these attempts at a mash-up at least once per season, to mixed results (everybody please youtube ‘Let’s Have a Kiki/Turkey Lurkey Time’). out of all of them, this Adele mash-up is probably the best, mostly because of Amber Riley and Naya Rivera KILLING IT on the vocals.

I think the Amber and Naya voices are amazing and the song fits its context brilliantly. (I admit I’m partly interested in the strength of the “singing quality vs uncoolness” vote).

Boy my relationship with Glee was a real rocky one but Amber Riley and Naya Rivera (RIP) could be relied on for strong performances long after the writing had completely fallen off a cliff (or maybe just even further down the cliff depending on your perspective) so I couldn’t help but vote for them for old time’s sake.
