Modern Day 7 Playlists

We’ve got playlists for today – the most rap-heavy day of the current poll! – but also another crowdsourcing opportunity. I’m still looking for big name 21st century covers of 20th century hits but today I’m after tracks for the second extra group – songs about the Internet! They have to be from the year 2000 or after, though (sorry “E-Mail My Heart”). Suggest some in the comments!

Songs about computers are a dime a dozen, but about the Internet? Yikes, tough assignment. I can think of only one: Todd Rundgren has always been genuinely tech-savvy (famously being co-author in the eighties of an actual SIGGRAPH paper on integrating music and computer graphics), so it’s no wonder that he wrote what surely must be one of the earliest songs about the online experience: I hate my frickin’ I.S.P. Which I’m fairly sure is still the *only* song that actually mentions domain name lookups (which is how I think you can tell it’s also about the Internet and not just about Compuserve or AOL).
It’s not one of his greatest songs, but certainly fun enough. And the sentiment is, of course, eternal.

One song I thought about for the death poll last summer was Father John Misty’s “Ballad of the Dying Man,” which is essentially about being addicted to online discourse and Comment Warz but I guess also you could have made it about letter writing forty years ago.
I’m sure I’ll have more when I’m not heading into a hectic workday.

Also there needs to be one of the Teejayx6 songs, like “Dark Web” or “Swipe Lessons,” where he describes in ill-advised detail the computer crimes he’s committing.

“Dessart” – “Mail Me” from the Suicide Club soundtrack. It’s Japanese so I don’t know if the lyrics are explicitly about the internet, but the film is, so.. maybe! Pretty sure it is about Email not Letter mail at least. I regret not putting it in the soundtrack poll so I’ll try again here
Petula Clark, “Cut Copy Me” more about computers generally than the internet but it’s close and it seems we aren’t finding a lot of options! From 2013 I think.
