A little Newsom goes a long way for me but this is head and shoulders my favourite thing I’ve ever heard by her – I am not sure what it means, as in, I can’t actually even parse the idea that gives it its title, but the swell of it makes “Time As A Symptom” one of the perfect closing tracks (I’m still kicking myself I forgot it for that poll).

Bit of an I don’t know group for me, highly unlikely that I’ll play any music that is thoughtful or deep…so went with Joanna Newsom, as managed to sell a CD by a band where she plays keyboards the other week for 12 quid.

Not a huge fan of what they’re doing here musically but fair play to Okkervil River, I was not prepared for the song “Famous Tracheotomies” to be so thoroughly about famous people’s tracheotomies.

Was all prepared to be sad that the incredible “Time, As a Symptom” wasn’t being properly recognized here, very happy to be (so far!) wrong. If all she’d ever done was this one and “Good Intentions Paving Company” she’d be one of the greats.

Correctly assuming that Newsom will do well, I’ve got behind surprise nominee Benjamin Schoos here. The verses are better than the chorus, but the former are very strong. Weaver song is fine but I reckon it’s only in the last couple of years she’s really come good in this current phase of her career.

I’m inclined to like Joanna Newsom anyway, but that mourning dove coo is the sound that kept me from losing it during the pandemic (they were nesting right outside my window) and that really kicked it over the hump. Glad to see Benjamin doing well since that was my 2nd choice.

Almost almost skipped Okkervil River 15 seconds in, had tears in my eyes by the end. Second terrific songwriterly one I’ve heard in the polls today, nice work nominators.

Wasn’t expecting Okkervil River to sound so sophisti-pop, I always thought of them as a folk band similar to Iron & Wine. The Benjamin Schoos song sounded just like I thought it would from seeing Laetitia Sadier on it, but Stereolab-esque songs are never unwelcome. Really strong group.
