I find myself quite liking Grandmaster Flash, so voted accordingly. It’s an enjoyable song! Not sure what it’s about though.
Thought the Pet Shop Boys were going to sing ‘Doctor Doctor’ at one point.
Felt that Biology wasn’t that dynamic.

Other fantastic nerd-fax about White Lines:

It hung around the 1984 chart for so long, it ended up the 13th biggest seller of the year in spite of only peaking at 7. This being even more impressive when you consider that 84 was the 80s’ biggest-selling year for singles, with six million-sellers.
Flash isn’t even on it – it’s all Melle Mel.
Which also means that Melle Mel joins Stevie Wonder, FGTH and Wham! in appearing on two of the 15 biggest-sellers of the year. The other one for Mel *and* Stevie being Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel For You’. (Wham! have three; The Power of Love is 16th; Band Aid excluded here)
Like Rapper’s Delight and The Message, it was co-written by Sylvia Robinson. Who is also the ‘Sylvia’ on Love Is Strange (from Dirty Dancing).
It’s mint.

tbf Grandmaster Flash is not credited on the record at all (despite Tom’s text and use of an erroneous French sleeve), just a sly misdirect by Sylvia*: the Sugar Hill labels read “grandmaster & MELLE MEL”

*who also probably did not ACKSHERLY write any of these songs

The bass riff is copied from Liquid Liquid’s “Cavern.” Wikip describes Liquid Liquid as “an American no wave and dance-punk group.” I think I saw them live, though I tend to confuse them with Konk, whom I also think I saw live.

It’s an “anti-drugs” song that deliberately makes drugs (cocaine) sound as sexy AF.
It is a work of absolute genius (especially in the long version), which I would probably vote for in any other group. And it was in my Uncool50.
Unfortunately:

Biology is also a work of genius
Biology was also in my Uncool50
Biology (at 1:32-1:33) includes my favourite moment in all pop music, ever.
The Modern section of the CC poll needs it more
Girls Aloud need it more because their vote is likely to be more localised

The run from 1.31 to the end of the first chorus is my favourite pop (near) minute. There’s perhaps only 1 “segment” of a song I’d rate higher (tbc later in this poll….)

I have attempted to “like” Jel’s comment. I do know what the Grandmaster Flash song is about.
Voted for Girls Aloud as it’s the only one of these four excellent songs that I have DJed myself.

Ended up voting for Girls Aloud. I think I prefer the other version of “The Night” (or at least it’s the one I’m most familiar with), “White Lines” could do well in another poll and “Suburbia” is far from my fave PSB single. Plus more “modern” songs in the later stages would be a good thing.

White Lines is mighty indeed. I still voted GA on the basis that I think they’ll need it more. They’re the two I’d like to see come out of what is a fairly ridiculous group.
I wonder if I can keep to the Twitter discipline of staying under 240 characters now we’re over here.

Pretty crazy to have “The Night” in a group where it’s only the second-best bassline. Voted neither of the bouncy basses though; the 2005-nostalgia was too strong.

Well, ‘Biology’ is a great portmanteau song that goes all sorts of places. ‘Suburbia’ is too on-the-nose and try-hard (why they outsold but never beat NO – did you see Tennant’s 6/10 review of PCL that was going round the Site recently? He wish). “White Lines” is the first rap song I ever heard, thanks to Now 3 (2nd song on side 2 after “Two Tribes”). It’s very good, nice irony, nice groove, stopped me buying any more heroin 😁.
