This group is curated by Simon T and as I understand it it’s a selection of Australian classics little known in the Northern Hemisphere – Models, Screamfeeder, Rocket Science and Thelma Plum, your time is now!
RESULTS: Thelma Plum enters the MODERN poll Round 1, while Screamfeeder make their way into ANCIENT Round 1.
I’ve liked this Models song for a long time, but the other three are all breaking news to me. I’ve heard OF Screamfeeder before, Rocket Science is borderline my kind of thing but I didn’t get much out of their attempt, and those chorused-up guitars in Thelma’s song sealed the deal.
Voted Thelma, crossing my fingers Models can coast thru.
I owned a Contact High shirt, which I bought when Rocket Science was tour Europe with The Dirtbombs on Eternal Holiday, an album I really like. Still I never got around to listening to the actual album, so this is my first exposure to Being Followed. Which fortunately turns out to be good, so I didn’t walk around in a shirt from a shitty album.
I don’t reckon Rocket Science have made a dud record, but live is where they always broke out, and a gig with the Dirtbombs would have been a sweaty chaotic thing to see.
Tempted by Screamfeeder for the relentlessly looping lyrics; tempted by Rocket Science because the video’s shadowdancing similarity to Rik’n’Ade in the end credits to (UK sitcom) Bottom made me hoot; but Better in Blak was the one I’d have been saddest to miss in the next round, so I plumped for Plum
Triple GB here. Finally voted Screamfeeder for how the cascading vocals emerge from the guitar roar.
10 for the GB longlist in 8 matches, avg. 1.25/match. One of ’em has only 1 vote so far (not mine); another has 2 (neither of ’em mine, either), another has 35.
Likely the first Models song I heard owing to its inclusion on the “Young Einstein” soundtrack. Thelma deserves to go far and I’ve always enjoyed the Rocket Science song (very much Napster/burn to mp3 CD era for me). Can’t go past Screamfeeder here though.
Can’t imagine the movie stands up too well now I’m no longer 12, but that soundtrack was a thousand times better than it had any right to be, still incredibly strong.
Gosh this is a brutal match-up. I have to vote Screamfeeder because Rocks on the Soul is a sorely underrated album and also for the time I saw them finish a mid-afternoon side-stage festival set by setting a guitar on fire, as if they could will themselves out of Brisbane and into Hendrix status through pyrotechnics alone. But Rocket Science was iconic early ’00s minor indie — I think the local street press had a story about them every second issue — and Thelma Plum deserves to stick around as an example of contemporary excellence. I run into “Better in Blak” all the time and it never gets old.
Oh, I like Screamfeeder, they sound a bit like Therapy?/ Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. Then they turn a bit twee-pop…
I also enjoyed Thelma Plum’s song
Brilliant group this one, went for Rocket Science but left wanting to investigate Thelma more the most.
Love the harmonies on the Thelma Plum song.
I’ve seen Screamfeeder and Rocket Science, and that Models songs was one I grew up with. Thelma is always great but won’t need any help. Almost went Models but thought I would throw some Queensland solidarity with Screamfeeder.
Screamfeeder is my favourite here, it’s fantastic. But I like Thelma Plum too! So these results are good.
Totally forgot about this Rocket Science song. What a banger!
Loved the others as well though. Didn’t think a band called Screamfeeder would be that melodic.
All new to me and the best group so far. Had to listen through a couple of times but Thelma Plum’s polished indie pop got the vote in the end. Very refreshing after a month in the 80s timewarp.
(Though it strike me that strategically I shouldn’t be pushing more good songs into the Modern Poll!)
Trent Reznor was listening to Models, eh?
Better in Blak a new one on me and probably on my GB list. An easy vote for me here.
Didn’t know about any of these acts before – now I got 4 GBs. Total group of death for me, kudos to the curator
Well that’s bloody lovely of you, thanks! Glad people seem to be enjoying & discovering.
It’s always driven me bananas that it tends to be only the most obvious Aust artists to get out of the qualifiers (Cave, Kylie, INXS), so I wanted to use this curated round to guarantee a couple of quality, local faves some further listeners. Everyone’s come to the party! Proper enjoying seeing the reactions, thanks all.
