The theme of this qualifier is of course BOATS, put together by Twitter’s Katie G.

Stan Rogers is from 1976 and will enter Round 1 of our ANCIENT poll if he makes it – the rest are all MODERN. “Wolves Of The Sea” is not on the Spotify playlist and is also Latvia’s 2008 entry for Eurovision!

RESULTS: Stan Rogers does indeed enter ANCIENT Round 1. Little Big Town sneaks into MODERN Round 1 by a single vote!

Pontoon’s alright I guess. Wolves of the Sea inspired me to look up the 2008 Eurovision results. Latvia did well to come 12th with this I reckon.

This was a lot of nautical fun in genres we haven’t seen much of – especially the folk-adjacent stuff. Folk a capella isn’t generally my bag but I voted for Stan Rogers here, the guy has flow.

It’s a running joke between me & my friends that I really like boats (to the point where most of my reading is about historical boats and I actually used to work at a maritime museum). So naturally, when coming up with songs to pick for the poll, I picked the four most different vaguely related to boats songs I could find from the depths of my mp3 storage, knowing full well that whoever wins is going to get absolutely crushed in the next round.

I enjoyed this nautical group, and wish now I had a curated group of pirate metal.
I liked Pontoon, as Little Big Town are a good band. I voted for the Eurovision song, and regret it a little now.

yar! I told my friends that May the 4th is now probably beating Talk Like a Pirate Day for most popular “pretend” holiday so apt it’s all shanties today. Oh, they corrected me that they both pale compared to 4/20. 🙂

ah, yep. As another Canadian, I can see why folks are voting for it having not heard it before but I would be ok to never hear it again. Voted for the Prydwen to sail again.

Liked “Barrett’s Privateers” following on “Biology” for how they both, in different ways, mess with us sonically. Each got my vote.

Celtic romantic mysticism is so steeped in naffness that it’s kinda fun to peer past the Clannad-Riverdance baggage and take “Prydwen” on its own terms as a kind de-metalled Evanescence tune? Not sure I was entirely successful in peering past that baggage, mind; I voted Little Big Town.

Is Little Big Country yacht country?
This poll made me wonder if Latvian pirates actually were a thing (that’s how my mind works) and yes, they were!
Barett’s Privateers is how a non-yacht boat song in my opinion should sound, so that got my vote.
