The League Of Extraordinary Tracks 8: 2023 Poll!

Folky vote from me this week:

• Usually I like the energy and virtuosity of flamenco music and Israel Fernandez’s track here is no exception. It’s one of those genres I always promise myself to get into, but never do.
• Likewise I generally tend to like Colin Stetson’s diverse output when I hear it, but he makes the kind of music that requires some effort, he always gets put on the backburner for music that’s more instantly gratifying.
• Tietê surprised me. Their music has a distinctly Balkan sound to me, but they are seemingly from Brazil. They also reminded me of Belgium’s Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung.
• ‘This Is New York’: Scar Lip couldn’t be more clear. I suppose we can call this traditional NYC music by now?

Personally I first nominated Berlin post-punkers Maggot Heart’s ‘Looking Back at You’. This band has become a personal favorite the past few years, with ‘No Song’ being my top track of 2021. But after seeing L’Ultima Notte di Amore in the cinema, a Michael Mann would’ve made if he were extremely Italian, I had to change my nomination to something from Santi Pulvirenti’s awesome Goblin-worshipping soundtrack for that movie.
