I suspect my tie-break criteria here are going to involve i) how audacious is it? (i.e. “Sometimes” is not as daring a title to use as “Monster Mash”) and ii) do I like it more than the ‘original’?
On both these factors “Kick Out The Jams” is starting with a significant advantage.

Heh, my tiebreaker was, to some extent: is it TRUE that I know another song with this title (without Googling)? Apparently, “Circles” was a minor hit for Adam F? *shrug emoji* Anyway, these are all good to great. In the end, went for Fatback, LRD, Plastiscines and Machineheart. Would love to find that Sarah Webster Fabio LP in the wild though.
P.S. The website is now completely hopeless on a phone. Constantly crashing. Better on a laptop (which is what I’m using to type and post this).

Not as I recall – they didn’t make too much of an impact over here, although they did play Phoenix Festival in ’97 and Reading in ’98.

A while back I’d pretty much given up on the LoET polls as simply being too esoteric for my tastes, but the most recent few have been better, and this one especially turned out to be a very welcome surprise.
Kate Davis and the Fatback Band are my favourites, but Lovebites was a fun discovery, and even more fun was recognizing Nik Kershaw’s voice on the Les Rhytmes Digitales track. And most of the other entries are enjoyable, too. A very accessible poll — my thanks to all the submitters.

LOSER stomped all over the DO I LIKE IT MORE THAN THE ORIGINAL question.

A few songs I suspect I might have heard but not sure, so the tie break was don’t pick those. Great group!!

Kate Davis is the big winner for me here. Don’t know her; doesn’t sound at all like Monster Mash; does sound great. Then Barbara & Ernie and (very much to my surprise) Lovebites. Lil’ Kim jumped out of the speakers on the first listen, but Machineheart is pulling even for the fourth spot after repeats.

This one was both a lot of fun, and ultimately surprisingly hard to research and pick. The amount of mediocre Song 2s (Songs 2?) I sat through on anonymous mixtapes doesn’t bare thinking about….
The playlist does however, a really strong set of tracks, and I’m still undecided beyond Plasticines who win the gold star even though I presume they are mocking me to my face!

I already knew “Kick Out the Jams” from the excellently titled glam obscurity comp Velvet Tinmine (hat tip to the fellow picker who may also own it) & “Stand & Deliver” from Apple Music’s algorithm or they would’ve been contenders.
“Loser” and “Play with Fire” were the immediate adds to my streaming library this time; as usual it was tough to pick after that due to overall high quality, but landed on “Circles” and “Night Fever” round out my ballot.

It wasn’t that one, it was the “Kenny Everett’s Worlds Worst Record Show” LP, which contains such terrible things as “Surfin’ Bird”, “Paralysed” and the eventual winner of the original poll “I want my baby back”..
Strange thing, that radio series – I got a bunch of recordings thanks to various sites on’tnet and some of the inclusions are somewhat outrageous – a bunch of perfectly fine doo-wop tracks for a kickoff….

Anyway, seeing as I have a potential for a “theme” in the future, should we do a “worst”?

No. One mans meat and so on…

The best League Poll yet. Wouldn’t mind any one of these winning. I love “Sometimes” from the get-go; feels very nineties in its dance versatility despite (or because of) a melody that harks back to Richard Rodgers in a pensive mood, and a garage rock beat right out of 1966. DQ’d though, ’cause I’d heard it before, one of the albums that Chuck Eddy made sure I listened to in 1999.

Lovebites “Stand And Deliver.” Instruments promise a dark ride, but the vocals are surprisingly up and glam.

Lil Kim “Fuck You.” After a while she just sounds mean, but the guitar finds more heat, tension, twists, and barbed wire in Jerry Bock than the original fiddler had.

Barbara & Ernie “Play With Fire,” makes me feel sudden nostalgia for my teen FM listening, but does so in six different ways at least, the ambitiousness of funk horns, meanwhile a bass and keyb that could ride the snake out west with Jim Morrison, churchy background singing, all this pulled together by sensitively warm folk-rock singing.

Kate Davis, whoever she is, “Monster Mash,” a winsomely vulnerable Marit Larsen type sounding knocked about by life and by the instrumental accompaniment, but quietly prevailing.
