The League Of Extraordinary Tracks II: 1. NOT IN ENGLISH – Playlists
Read and comment

We’re BACK! The League Of Extraordinary Tracks returns with 11 new players and 8 new (well, maybe new) themes. As before the rules are simple. You listen to the songs picked by our players each week, and each week you vote for your 4 favourites. The catch? You can only vote for songs you didn’t already know. It’s all about discovery and hearing new things, and I hope you enjoy it!

Vote in the Poll Post once you’ve listened.

The first week theme is Not In English – and here’s the YouTube playlist:

There’s also a Spotify playlist – BUT bear in mind this doesn’t include Tracks 10 and 11 (by Deckadas and Jeans Team).

https://spotify.link/lEwDNDiTZDb (this isn’t embedding for some reason – sorry)

What Is A People’s Pop Poll (And Can We Eat It)?
Read and comment

It’s been suggested a quick INTRO and UPDATE post would be helpful here!

This is the blog homepage for the People’s Pop Polls. These are regular (roughly monthly) themed music tournaments. People nominate tracks, I arrange them into groups, everyone votes on them and discusses the songs. It’s fun!

The polls have generally run on Twitter. I recently tried to move them off Twitter and it’s proved difficult for a bunch of reasons. So the tournament style polls are moving back to Twitter for now.

The current poll is the CHARITY CRUSHER. This was an unthemed poll in which people could nominate anything they liked to raise money for ActionAid and the Ruth Hayman Trust. We raised over £3200 and got over 400 tracks to poll. That’s too many for a normal poll so I’ve split it into two sections, ANCIENT and MODERN. The Ancient poll is anything released before the year 2000, the Modern is anything released in 2000 or since.

We’ve just finished doing the Modern Qualifiers (opening round) on this site, and now we’ll do the Ancient Qualifiers on Twitter.

After the Charity Crusher polls finish we’ll go back to the theme polls. The first two of these will be LATE WORK (tracks released in the 25th year or later of an artist’s career) and the year 2015.

Meanwhile on here we’ll be running the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY TRACKS, a more leisurely poll taking advantage of the things we can’t do on Twitter but can on a blog. I’ll be opening player slots for this later in the week.

For a history of the polls and a lot more detail on how they work go here.

For a complete list of what’s qualified so far in the current poll go here.

And here’s the playlist for the entire Ancient poll (not in match order)

TODAY’S PLAYLISTS (Modern Day 11)

It’s the closing day of Modern Qualifiers! What happens next? There’s a special post about that. Today we have two final dips into the Low Shazam Zone and also two special groups whose themes were voted on by YOU dear voters. The “21st Century covers of 20th Century songs” group and a group themed around THE INTERNET.

The YouTube playlist is here but won’t embed at the right point – I think cos it’s over 200 songs long now.

Into the final leg of Modern Qualifier polling with our only curated headline group and a very strong selection elsewhere.

If you haven’t already, you should probably have a look at this post and discussion where I’m talking about how well the move to a new site is or isn’t working and what might happen once the Modern Qualifiers finish. I’ve read everyone’s comments (here and on the Bird Site) and I’ll be doing a “what’s next” post after tomorrow’s remaining 4 groups! Now on with the PLAYLISTS…

I’m nervous about today cos I think it’s overall the day with the least well-known tracks so it could really struggle for votes. Fame is no reflection of quality though – I hope you take these lovely groups to your heart!

It’s the final week of Modern Qualifiers! Today we’ve got a particularly gruesome Bracket Balancer headline group, a couple of cracking Curated Groups and a further venture into the Low Shazam Zone. Best get on with it eh?
