Knowing there's a Sparks hive I had to go for Heaven 17 in case they weren't going to get out of this group. Otherwise I'd have voted for Tetsuya Komuro who is languishing sadly.

I have a hot take. Sparks are kinda like They Might Be Giants for grown-ups. I quite like this song. All around, a good group! I’m voting for the Ramones for expressing one of my fundamental feelings.

Here’s our 6th curated group, from Twitter’s own @spimtobley, and the theme is SISTER ACTS – four groups made up of sisters. Not only is there a wild genre mix here, it’s a pretty globe-spanning bunch too – the Lijadu Sisters from Nigeria, Ireland’s Nolans, and from America there’s 702 (Nevada) and P.S.Eliot (Alabama).

RESULTS: The sisters who progress are The Nolans and 702 – both into the ANCIENT Poll Round 1.

Our fifth group comes from Andy R and it’s a broadly refugee-themed group for a poll raising money for refugee and international aid charities. 2016’s “Running (Refugee Song)” was written specially to bring awareness to the issue – it’s joined here by thematically linked tracks from Depeche Mode, R.E.M. and Tears For Fears, all of whom we last saw in our 1985 tournament!

RESULTS: A pretty clear win for Tears For Fears and REM sees both bands into the ANCIENT poll Round 1.

Our fourth Curated Group comes from @danpopomatic and I am delighted to announce that the theme is DISCO. There may be more to it I admit but that’s very strongly the vibe I’m getting here. We have soulful disco from Jimmy Ross, Ghanaian disco from Kiki Gyan, anthemic gay disco from Macho and a modern take from Purple Disco Machine. Get down (and vote).

RESULTS: Jimmy Ross and Kiki Gyan advance to ANCIENT Round 1 – we won’t be seeing them for a while.

Our third curated group is from Andrew R and has an awesome theme – it’s the best songs he’s found while curating clip quizzes for Sporcle. Blessed are the quizmakers – here’s a link to all Andrew’s quizzes.

RESULTS: 10,000 Maniacs and The Sharades both progress to ANCIENT Round 1 – we’ll see them again in June.

The theme of this qualifier is of course BOATS, put together by Twitter’s Katie G.

Stan Rogers is from 1976 and will enter Round 1 of our ANCIENT poll if he makes it – the rest are all MODERN. “Wolves Of The Sea” is not on the Spotify playlist and is also Latvia’s 2008 entry for Eurovision!

RESULTS: Stan Rogers does indeed enter ANCIENT Round 1. Little Big Town sneaks into MODERN Round 1 by a single vote!
