Modern Playlists Day 6 + Covers Crowdsourcing
Read and comment

Welcome back! This post is doing DOUBLE DUTY as a standard playlist post but also as a crowdsourcing exercise for one of the Day 11 groups next week, a themed group on “21st Century Covers of 20th Century Songs”.

There are two criteria here. One is that it’s a genuinely transformative cover, not just an ‘interpolation’ or some John Lewis piano shit. So like “Comfortably Numb” by Scissor Sisters. The other is that it’s something we haven’t polled before. So NOT like “Comfortably Numb” by Scissor Sisters.

Suggestions in comments please! Now onto the playlists:

A harder-edged day with our most rocking headline group and some uncompromising material in our undercard matches as well. All this and ADMIN in the comments too.

Modern Poll Day 3 Playlists
Read and comment

The third day of the Modern poll – 5 more groups, only one of which (the fourth) is curated. If I were a betting pollrunner I would say today’s headline group includes the poll favourite… but we’ll see.

I’m not planning to run polls at the weekend, so after this you get a chance to catch up on the Modern groups so far and we’ll be back on Monday. Check the comments for a note on how we’re resolving ties this poll too.

Playlist time for today’s matches, with more titans clashing in the headline group and no less than 3 Curated Groups too. One quirk of today is that a lot of tracks – 5 out of 20! – are only in the YT playlist.

In the comments to this post there’s an update on some current site issues/glitches…

MODERN Poll Day 1
Read and comment

The CURATORFEST polls are still running but we’re going to put those aside now as we get into the Qualifiers for the MODERN half of the two Charity Crusher polls.

I’ll be running 5 qualifiers a day, and at the top of the page you’ll always see the daily Spotify and YouTube playlists. Here’s Day 1, which proves its modern credentials by having two songs about loving robots – and that’s just the ones which can declare their mechanical passion.

Curatorfest Qualifier 11! CURATED by Jamie R
Read and comment

Jamie R gives us a selection which he wasn’t going to make curated until he realised the tracks tell a story. Happy or sad? You be the judge. Owen Pallett, Me’shell NdegeoCello, Bobby Short and Umberto Tozzi are your narrators.

RESULTS: Another two tracks heading for ANCIENT Round 1 here. Me’Shell NdegeoCello dominated the group, but Umberto Tozzi managed to reel in his rivals to take second by a single vote.
